Tommy's Birthday!

My little baby turned one!! His birthday was on the 15th of April, but first-time grandparents were going to be out of town and they didn't want to miss Tommy's birthday! I posted the invitation (above) because I am SO proud of it. I made it on picnik you know, first time.

Anyway, I bought a monkey cake pan but started getting anxious about decorating the cake because I've never done it before. I told Ryan I was just going to make the traditional two-layer cake instead, but Ryan surprised me by saying he would decorate the monkey cake himself. I was like, if you're going to do it then I'll do it with you. So, we made the cake and Ryan was icing pro and taught me different techniques that he somehow figured out on his own. When we were all done Ryan was like, "this cake is SO adorable." I just had to kiss him when he said that.

Tommy was just learning how to walk around his birthday, so I included a picture of his wobbly steps. He's a pro now, but it was cute in the beginning.

Then we got a picture with all of his girl cousins. Tommy has four older girl cousin and has one younger girl cousin. We'll see if we can get my sisters to make any boy babies!

Tommy's favorite thing to do right now is push things. He LOVES pushing anything, a chair, laundry basket, tool box, trash can, etc. He spent at least 30 minutes pushing this wagon around at the park.

Then we sang happy birthday to Tommy! He had this little smile on his face while we were singing, it was cute. Then Ryan and I helped him blow out the candles. What we didn't realize is that he was getting a taste of the cake while we weren't looking! When I saw the picture I asked Ryan why he was making a weird face. He told me we were "fake blowing" for the picture. I was like, so...don't look weird next time.

Tommy with his eyes glazed over eating the cake. He wasn't crazy about it. He would just grab little bits and put them in his mouth. A little neater than I thought he would be.

I am so glad we got a picture of Tommy giving me kisses! He is a very loving boy and likes to give open-mouthed kisses. Even though it is very wet it just melts my mommy-heart.

Tommy saying, "So, that was awesome."

We gave Tommy a big plastic dump truck for his birthday (you know, because he likes to push things), so he sat on it while he opened gifts from everyone.

The party ended with Tommy being pushed from one end of the basketball court to the other. He loved it!

Just a little update on Tommy for records sake: He is still a sweet little boy who loves being independent. He loves walking around, being outside, flowers, doggies, ducks, Twizzler Nibs, and going down slides. He can say a few words now: no-no, woof (for doggie), mama, dada, uh-oh, ticki ticki (for tickle tickle), bebe (for baby), nana (banana), ot-da (for hot dog), caca (for cracker), and a bunch of silly gibberish.

Tommy is so so adorable.

Katie, I think it is so cool that you are living in AZ, having birthday parties at a park in our old neighborhood. This is cheesy, but I feel like you are somehow carrying on the happy memories of our childhood to this next generation. I don't know. Maybe I'm just jealous that you are living in AZ with a family and have a little more direction and stability and family in your life than I currently do. Haha. Anyway, seeing the "park on Pheasant" on that invite made me smile :)

Anyway, I'm glad you're blogging again. I like knowing a little bit about what's going on in your life.

Hahaha I love this! He is so stinkin' cute. My favorite part is thinking about your wild expectations of Tommy getting handfuls of cake, stuffing them in his face, throwing them at people and making the biggest mess he possibly could. I love you Katie...you are absolutely hilarious. And you are an amazing mother, I always knew you would be.

The more I learn about Tommy, the more I think that our boys are so alike. He has 8 girl cousins, one boy. But he'll have a brother and my sister is preggo with a boy. And I must say that your your cake looks fantastic! I am very impressed!
